If you want to increase the resale value of your house or just need more living space for the convenience of your extended family, adding on to an existing structure is a great way to increase square footage and value to your home. Any form of home addition, whether it’s a master bedroom addition, second story addition, or even a sunroom addition, is a complex construction project. Sometimes building a room addition is even more difficult than building a small home. For one, the connection details with the existing structure are tough, and therefore the room addition plans must be extremely accurate. For instance, the wall and roof heights are a very important factor to consider. The roof line, overhang, gutter board, soffits etc…all must match perfectly on the outside with the new home addition. Sometimes a bedroom addition has a crawl space which needs ventilation to eliminate moisture problems and dampness, so the crawl space should be connected with the crawl space of the existing structure.

There are other things to consider when building a home addition or even a small room addition that never are an issue when you build a new home from scratch. Working around people and finished surfaces requires extra care; dust and utility (electric – plumbing) interruptions must be kept to a minimum and even the heating and cooling system is taken in to consideration. When working on the room addition plans the architect and home contractor must remember to evaluate the heating and cooling system needed for the new bedroom addition or home addition. Extending the existing heating and cooling system into the room addition may not be enough because the furnace and air conditioner were sized accurately for the original house, but they will not provide enough air for the new addition. If you are adding several hundred feet of new floor area, you would need a significant upgrade of your heating and cooling system. Another crucial aspect of room addition design is making sure the ceilings meet at the right height. This requires careful calculation of the foundation height from the point where the “break-through” or “connection” will be. Otherwise the floors do not line up.

The first step in home theater design is to look for inspiration. You’ve probably looked through a couple of magazines or searched the Internet for possible designs. If not, you should do this first. Look through each design and write down what you like the most about each home theater set up whether it’s the furniture, color scheme, or equipment. Then, it’s time to look at each part and come up with several possible buys. The most important part of your home theater will be your furniture. Your furniture is what will give you comfort and set the designs and pace for the rest of your home theater. When it comes to furniture, think about keeping it simple. Go with chairs that are comfortable and use colors such as black, gray, red, and beige.

Then think about what kind of furniture to get. If you are planning for big events or have a big family, it’s best to go with a sofa that seats 3-4 people. When hosting parties then it’s best to buy multiple sofas to seat everyone in your home theater. If you want a more intimate or casual setting, you can go with a recliner or a 2 person love seat. Some chairs actually come with a table and a chair riser for extra comfort and accommodation.

The same process will apply to getting your equipment. Think about what look you’re going for. Do you want to wall mount your TV or place it on an entertainment station? Do you want to connect all your components separately or do you want a digital receiver so you can control your TV, DVD, video game system, and speakers in one unit? If you don’t have anything set in stone yet, write down a list of possible buys and do some comparison shopping.

Lighting is the final element to completing your home theater. It’s best to get lighting where you can dim and brighten the lights. This will allow you to set up an intimate setting and a vibrant setting. The focus of the lighting should be centered but there can be an extra lamp on the side if you want to light up the whole room. Experiment by placing your light at different angles until you feel that it is just right. As a final tip, you should think about your budget. Think about how much you can afford to spend in each area. The furniture is really what makes your home theater so you should make sure you allocate a good budget to this aspect of the design. You can then move on to the equipment and finish up with the lighting to create the perfect environment for your friends and family.

Having made that statement, please know that if you are a traditional home decorator with a formal dining room that displays your fine dining furniture complete with chandelier, wainscoating and oriental rug, I think that’s great! And, I hope you find much enjoyment and satisfaction from the most traditional function of this space. For many readers, though, the formal dining area of the past may not prove to be a functional use of the space for you. And that leads to the three questions you need to ask yourself before making any decisions or purchases for your dining room decor and design project.

Consider your lifestyle before assuming that you will use this space as a dining area. For example, do you entertain and therefore need an area that can serve a group of guests? How many people currently live in your home…do you need a larger area for meals on a regular basis? Do you even like to cook??? Think about these things before planning to purchase a dining room set. Maybe you don’t need one!

Look at the function of the other rooms and spaces in your home. Is there a purpose for this space that would better serve your home and lifestyle? Some thoughts would be a home office, den/TV area, guest room, etc. Perhaps you are currently using a guest room as a home office, but would really love to have the guest room back. Well, here you go! Use the dining area, or a portion of it, for your office space. You get the idea… Perhaps a combination of the above would suit your lifestyle perfectly.

What is your budget for the purchase of furniture and overall dining room decorating? Whatever your decision as to the function of the room, be sure to do an honest evaluation of the budget. Consider the cosmetic costs, such as painting, flooring, decorative trim, built-ins and window treatments. Then, the actual furniture that will be put in the space, whether that will be a dining set of some sort, a home office setup or small conversation / TV area. Answer these three questions and you’ll be on your way to creating a dining room area that suits your lifestyle to a tee!

Room design can be fun and can actually involve the entire family however without a little knowledge under your belt you might find it very costly as well. Most people who begin to design a new room will do so on a budget that does not allow for room or error. But after a little homework and a lot of patience, you design will sure to satisfy your taste and cravings for showing off your creativity.

To begin a room design you will want to start with an inventory the furniture, area of the room, flooring and paint that is already in the room. Some of the furniture and other items already in the room you might be able to salvage and use in the new room design. Unless you are revamping the entire room with a new style and theme, there is no reason why you couldn’t use the current list of inventory but just with a new look.

If the room you are going to change is the living room bed room or even a library, the choices are unlimited as far as flooring, furniture, paint and design. Look at the existing inventory and if you want to change the look, color, etc try using a variety of fabrics available to recover the furniture. You might want to consider slip covers in order to stay within budget. These can be easily whipped up on an inexpensive sewing machine. The fabrics you choose could be coordinates to the paint and the flooring as well.

Speaking of flooring, this is the next big step in room design. You will want to choose flooring that works with the functionality of the room. For instance, if you will have a lot of traffic in the room, you might want to choose a tile that is scuff proof and washes easily without fading. If it is going to get a little traffic in the room but is in a central part of the house where most of the traffic flows through the room, you might want to consider purchasing flooring that is low shag and is spill resistant so that accidents do not spoil your creation. Now for those rooms that you or another person will only be enjoying, there are the floorings that are a little more appealing to the eye such as high shags or very bright color fabrics.

First you have to choose where you are going to put your home theater. If you have a spare room, it is a good choice. If you are going to convert another room for your home theater, then planning that must be considered too. Having selected the place, you need to consider the design that you will use. You may want to choose a room where the screen is the centerpiece of the room. You may choose to place all the chairs on the other side of the room. You may also consider a simple theater room where sofas and the equipment are only there. You may even want to put in a refrigerator or a microwave so you can get food easily while watching.

Second is that you need to fix the acoustics. Sound is very important in a home theater room design. A movie is useless without the sound. You may opt for a surround sound system when choosing your theater room design. Within the room, you may do some tricks in order to keep sound from bouncing off this is to preserve the sound in the room.

Light is an important element of home theaters. In movie theaters, lights are dimmed. Especially when watching a movie, light are switched off. This enhances the colors that you see when you watch a movie. Every detail will be seen properly when the lights are turned off. With the room, as much as possible, do not put too much windows since light can penetrate into the room and disrupt a movie. It is okay if small ventilation is put, but a room can do without this since you may have the room with an aircon.

Lastly, when choosing a home theater room design, the system and equipment is important. You have to choose them really well. These must just fit into your room. It is not about having the biggest screen of speakers. What is important that when choosing the equipment such as the screen and speakers, they fit well into the room. No matter what equipment you choose to put in your home theater, make sure that all the wiring are hidden to prevent accidents or unplugging them while in the middle of a movie.
